Standards and expectations for all La Xenia students, with additional campus-life requirements for students studying on-site.
Student Conduct & Academic Standards
The Student Code of Conduct, disciplinary procedures and plagiarism policy apply to all La Xenia students, including online and on-site students, wherever relevant to their mode of study.
Campus Life & Presentation
Dress code, uniform, excursion and dormitory requirements apply specifically to students participating in on-site study or official in-person activities.
Student Code of Conduct
Responsibilities of the Student.
All students are expected to uphold standards of conduct that support academic integrity, respect and the proper functioning of La Xenia.
Every Student Shall
- Obey the laws of his/her country and the country where he/she is studying.
- Obey the rules and regulations of La Xenia Campus and its satellite centers.
- Cooperate with the school authorities in all school matters, whether personal or on behalf of others, including providing information and evidence.
- La Xenia always requires all students to carry their student card. Students must show their student card when dealing with the administration and when asked by a person or persons authorised to do so by La Xenia.
- Attend learning sessions, except with the prior permission from the subject teacher.
- Sit for examinations, unless barred from doing so.
- Be responsible for safeguarding and ensuring the safety of the property of La Xenia used by him/her.
Every Student Shall Not
- No student is permitted to be involved in any activity or activities or conduct which may damage or harm the interests, harmony, or good name of La Xenia or its students, staff, officers or employees.
- No student is permitted to use any lecture, tutorial or teaching materials which are provided to him/her by La Xenia for the purpose of publication, distribution or dissemination, whether for payment or otherwise.
- No student may plagiarise the intellectual property of others, including data, ideas, publications and inventions.
- No student may cheat or attempt to cheat or act in a manner that can be interpreted as cheating or attempting to cheat in an examination.
- No student or group of students may organize, conduct or participate in any activity in the name of La Xenia without permission or written instructions to do so from the center.
- No student or group of students may promote, manage, or assist in the collection of money or contributions in the name of La Xenia without permission or written instruction to do so from La Xenia.
- No student or group of students may make any statement to the Press in the name of La Xenia without the written permission of La Xenia.
Student Discipline
Disciplinary Procedures.
A student who violates any part of the Student Code is considered to have committed a breach of conduct.
Possible Penalties
A student found guilty of a breach may be subject to one or a combination of two or more of the following penalties:
01 Investigation of Misconduct
Every report of wrongdoing shall be investigated by the Investigation Committee and the Investigation Committee shall decide whether the alleged offence is serious, minor or whether there is no case to answer.
Serious offences include academic dishonesty, fraud, plagiarism, any activity that adversely affects the good name of La Xenia and involvement in criminal activities.
If the Investigation Committee finds that a student may have committed an offence, it shall inform the student of the offence of which he/she is accused and require the student to provide a written explanation within a reasonable period of time.
If the student pleads not guilty and his/her explanation is accepted, or the student admits his/her guilt, the Investigation Committee shall then take the appropriate action.
If the student pleads not guilty and his/her explanation is not accepted by the Investigation Committee, the student shall be informed of his/her offence and required to appear before the Disciplinary Committee within a period not less than 14 days from the date of notification.
A student who does not make the explanation statement, does not pay the fine imposed, or fails to appear before the Disciplinary Committee shall be suspended until he/she provides an explanation, pays the fine imposed, or agrees to appear before the Disciplinary Committee.
02 Disciplinary Proceedings
- If the student pleads not guilty and the Disciplinary Committee finds that there is a case to answer, the student shall be asked to provide evidence. The student may call witnesses or present document(s) or other materials in his/her defence. The Disciplinary Committee can question the student or any of the witnesses and examine any document(s) or materials, and the student may cross-examine any of the witnesses.
- If the student pleads guilty, the Disciplinary Committee shall explain the facts of the case to him/her.
On completion of the proceedings and, if the Disciplinary Committee finds the student guilty, before imposing sentence, the Disciplinary Committee shall ask the student to make a mitigation plea.
If the Disciplinary Committee imposes payment of compensation or damages to the Institution or a third party, the amount shall be fair and reasonable taking into account all matters related to the case and the persons involved.
03 Appeals, Implementation & Records
A student who is not satisfied with the decision of the Disciplinary Committee can submit a written appeal providing the grounds of appeal to the President for consideration by the Institution Board, on condition that such an appeal is submitted within 14 days from the date of sentencing. The decision of the Board of Directors shall be final.
The Disciplinary Committee, with the consent of the President, may delegate its authority to any officer or member of staff of the Institution to deal with any disciplinary offence.
If a student makes an appeal, this does not constitute grounds for suspension of the implementation of any penalty, fine or compensation ordered.
Fines shall be paid to the Financial Controller who shall then make payment to the third party, if necessary.
Any document(s) or other materials submitted before the Disciplinary Committee during disciplinary proceedings shall be kept in the care of the Institution until such proceedings are completed or until the deadline for appeal has passed.
The Disciplinary Committee shall make written notes of all disciplinary proceedings before it. For record-keeping purposes, these notes do not need to be verbatim.
Academic Integrity
Plagiarism Policy.
Academic integrity is a core expectation for all La Xenia students, regardless of study mode.
Plagiarism is “thoughts theft” or the wrongful acquisition of another author’s ideas, thoughts, language or expressions and presenting them as one’s own ideas without giving credit to the original author.
- Wording, sentences, phrases or long extracts from published or unpublished papers, articles, or Internet sources without citing the source.
- Another person’s work without citation of the sources.
La Xenia instructors are responsible for checking all students’ submitted work for plagiarism by whatever means they deem appropriate.
Instructors should provide students with clear instructions and guidance about how to write papers in their own words and how to avoid plagiarism.
01 Handling Plagiarism Cases
If the student commits plagiarism for the first time and the plagiarised work does not exceed 50% of the paper, the instructor will send an informal warning to the student and require the student to resubmit the work for assessment and submit an incident report form to the Dean.
If the student repeats the plagiarism and the plagiarised work exceeds 50% of the paper, the instructor will consider applying a failing grade for the work and will submit a plagiarism report to the Dean.
If the student continues to repeat the plagiarism and the plagiarised work exceeds 50% of the paper, the instructor will apply a failing grade for the course and the student will receive a formal warning letter.
02 Minor Plagiarism — Levels 1–3
Level 1
May occur when a student lacks the knowledge or awareness about plagiarism. In this case, the instructor will directly ask the student to read the Plagiarism chapter of the Student Handbook and request the student to complete the assignment.
Level 2
Plagiarism breaches of academic integrity that are more serious than Level 1, such as:
- Submitting the same academic work or content exceeding 50% of previous academic work to more than one course without permission of instructors.
- Quoting or paraphrasing content without citing the source.
- Using data or work from a report without acknowledging the sources.
- Asking for help or assistance from others without acknowledgement in the final project.
Sanctions for Level 2 plagiarism include:
- Informal warning from instructors.
- Make up the plagiarised work.
- Reduce by one grading scale on the work.
Level 3
Plagiarism breaches that are more serious than Level 2. Level 3 behaviours include:
- Repeat of Level 2 plagiarism.
- The plagiarised work exceeds 50% of the paper.
- Submitting work of other people.
- Using data or content from unauthorised sources.
Sanctions for Level 3 plagiarism include:
- Receive a failing grade in the subject.
- Receive a formal warning letter.
- Retake the course as well as all related exams, exercises, assignments and final project.
Campus Life & Professional Presentation.
The following requirements apply to students participating in on-site study and official in-person La Xenia activities.
Dress Code & Uniform
Professional Presentation.
Hospitality is about more than what happens in the classroom. Professional presentation is part of preparing students for the expectations of the hospitality industry.
Why do we have a dress code?
A hotel or restaurant will expect its team to be presentable whether they are working with guests, preparing food, serving in a restaurant or working behind the scenes.
Our dress code helps students become accustomed to those professional expectations while studying.
Students do not need to dress identically every day. They simply need to look ready to be part of a professional hospitality team.
Your La Xenia Uniforms
Students are provided with two practical uniforms:
- Restaurant uniform.
- Housekeeping uniform.
Students will be informed when each uniform is required.
La Xenia School T-Shirt
When a practical uniform is not required, students should wear their La Xenia school T-shirt.
In cooler weather, students may wear:
- A neutral-coloured cardigan over the school T-shirt.
- A neutral-coloured, long-sleeved shirt underneath the school T-shirt.
What Can I Wear?
- Jeans — light blue, navy, grey or black.
- Business trousers/slacks — black or grey.
- Skirts — black or grey and knee-length or longer.
- Shorts — knee-length or longer, in denim or a smart cotton/chino style.
Sports, gym and basketball-style shorts are not suitable. Clothing should be clean, tidy and in good condition.
Shoes
White or black sneakers without colourful accents are permitted, as are dress shoes, loafers and similar footwear in simple, neutral colours.
For kitchen practicals, closed-toe footwear is compulsory. Sneakers are permitted provided they are closed-toe and appropriate for the activity.
Hair, Nails & Jewellery
Long hair must be neatly tied back in either a sleek ponytail or bun. Shorter hair should be neat, styled and professional.
Nails must be kept short and clean. Nail polish is not permitted during kitchen practicals.
In some circumstances gloves may be permitted instead, but students must ask their instructor first.
Simple jewellery is welcome provided it is appropriate and safe for the activity.
Religious Requirements
Reasonable exceptions to the dress code can be made to accommodate religious requirements.
Students should speak with La Xenia in advance so an appropriate arrangement can be agreed.
Provided Upon Arrival
La Xenia Uniform
All students will be provided with:
- 1 set of La Xenia uniform polo.
- 1 set of housekeeping uniform.
- 1 set of kitchen uniform.
These are included in the Operating Expenses.
Students wishing to purchase an additional La Xenia polo should contact the Administrative Office or Student Services Centre. Extra uniforms may not always be held in stock.
Students may also order additional polos before arriving on campus through the Admissions Office and arrange payment together with their remaining payment after visa approval, helping ensure the uniform is available on arrival.
Official Activities
Excursions & Trips.
Students continue to represent La Xenia when participating in school-organised excursions and official activities.
For school-organised excursions, the same general dress standards apply as when wearing the La Xenia T-shirt.
Students should wear their school T-shirt with one of the permitted options for trousers, jeans, skirts, shorts and footwear.
Students should dress appropriately for the weather. Jackets, coats, scarves and other suitable outdoor clothing may of course be worn when needed.
For excursions involving hiking, sports or other activities, students will be informed in advance if different clothing or footwear is recommended.
The main expectation is simply to look neat and presentable while representing La Xenia outside the campus.
After Classes & Dormitory
Your Campus Home.
Once classes and scheduled school activities are finished, students may relax and dress casually during their personal time.
Free Time
Once classes and scheduled school activities are finished, the professional school dress code does not apply.
Students living on campus are free to dress casually during their personal time.
Clothing should nevertheless remain appropriate for a shared residential and educational environment.
Indoors, students should wear socks or indoor slippers rather than outdoor shoes.
Swiss weather can mean rain, snow and plenty of mud, and outdoor shoes can quickly leave dormitory floors wet and dirty.
Leaving outdoor shoes at the entrance helps everyone keep their shared home clean, dry and comfortable.
